The Importance of Telling YOUR Story

The functional medicine timeline is a cornerstone of the client-practitioner relationship. This tool allows me to capture the your important life events, family history, and genetic information from in utero to present day. In particular, the tool helps pinpoint antecedents, triggers, and mediators (ATMs) to help identify any role they play—past or present—in the your disease.
This foundational tool enables you to detail your life and health history and me to plot it chronologically, often revealing previously unseen relationships between various factors. Through retelling your own health stories, most likely you start to see connections between life events, health behaviors, and current states of disease, which may help to motivate you toward change. What makes the functional medicine timeline different from other tools is that it has the effect of giving my client insight into previous life events and validates for them that their story has been heard.
The timeline is client-centered because it places central importance on client experience, not just my interpretation of the health symptoms. This encourages shared decision-making and client-practitioner collaboration in developing a treatment plan.

How The Functional Medicine Timeline Works
While gathering your personal history, I break information down into these three categories: Antecedents, Triggers and Mediators.
During the consultation, we pinpoint the moment where your illness actually began, which is sometimes much earlier than many people initially realize.
Because, Functional Medicine is all about identifying root causes of symptoms and addressing disturbances that generate those symptoms, your story becomes the foundation of your treatment plan, which is the map of your journey towards your optimum health.
Antecedents: these are predisposing factors that impact your health. Some examples of antecedents include:
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Birth factors
  • Physical trauma – ie. sports, car accidents…
  • Emotional traumas – ie. witnessing a death, sexual abuse, natural disasters…
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Drug or alcohol use or addiction
  • Intestinal permeability
  • Infections
Triggers: these are factors that provoke the symptoms of your illness. Some examples of triggers include:
  • Physical trauma
  • Psychological trauma
  • Microbes
  • Toxins
  • Infections
  • Surgery
  • Memories
  • Food sensitivities
  • Allergies
Mediators: these are perpetuating factors that contribute to the pathological changes and dysfunctional responses in your body. Some examples of mediators include:
  • Ongoing psychological stress – ie. toxic relationships, career related…
  • Environmental toxin exposure
  • Inflammatory diet
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Inflammatory cytokines
  • Mitochondrial damage
